Sidetrack Web Series

I am very happy to announce that I have been cast in an incredible new web series called Sidetrack. It follows queer women and people living in NYC, coming soon to a screen nearest you. I play Allie, who is outgoing, ambitious and slightly obsessed with toiletry products. She produces a youtube channel with her significant other, Jo.

Filming begins this summer, and the series will premiere sometime in the fall.

New Film Project

For the past two weekends in NYC, I have been filming a new short film called Wake Up. The film is about two musicians who create music together without ever meeting. I played the female lead, and created new improvised musical pieces with lead actor and director, Leonardo Abraham. He played the guitar and I played the clarinet.

The film is currently being edited and the director hopes to submit to the Sundance Film Festival.

Chalk designs from the parking lot up to the entrance were featured with designs like hopscotch, butterflies and directions like ‘Bee this way.’ At the very entrance of the theater, art projects by local school children were displayed. Upon entrance of the actual lobby were the publicity materials announcing a spelling bee were prominently displayed. They were also designed by 5th graders thanks to a partnership I set up with the middle school. The lobby itself also featured a ‘school trophy case’ to create the atmosphere of an actual elementary school.
  • Interactive games in the lobby, were ‘Word of the Day’ with magnet letters to allow audience members to leave messages. Also featured was a ‘Last Minute Study Station’ which had a stool and a dictionary to look as if contestants were actually coming in.
  • Coordinated the audience participation sequence of the show, by pre-selecting volunteers before each show and explaining the rules to them.
  • Coordinated the cast and crew selecting a charity to sponsor to help kids learn how to read and spell. Every show, I sold juice boxes to earn money for our charity raising over $270.

Bobby Hebert (Drew University) – Dramaturg

  • Compiled a fact book about Hurricane Katrina for the cast and crew to better understand the storm and the horrors that followed after.
  • Created a Bobby Hebert website for Drew University and audience members to get more information about the horrific storm. The wesbite was featured in my lobby display and sent around in a campus wide email to promote the show. The site features facts about the play, playwright, survivor’s stories and Hurricane Katrina facts, quotes, and timeline. To view the site, click https://drewuniversitybobbyhebert.wordpress.com/
  • Decorated the theater with Mardi Gras lights, beads and decorations and served King Cake to the audience.
  • Created an interactive audience lobby display with pictures and facts on Katrina as well as the sign a pants initiative. One survivor stated he wrote all his contact information and blood type on his pants because he had no other possession. I displayed a beat up pair of pants next to his story and encouraged audience members to sign the pants with their name and other information.

Antigone (Drew University) – Dramaturg

  • Created a comprehensive production history which can be found here: Antigone Production History

  • Created a lobby display using screenshots of the facebook pages and production stills. Click the thumbnail to enlarge.

Mountain Language (Drew University) – Dramaturg

  • Created a production history for the director.
  • Created an interactive lobby display for the audience. Lobby display featured articles paralleling the torture found in the play to that of the current controversy surrounding the film, Zero Dark Thirty. The centerpiece of the board was a world map marked with places where modern accounts of torture had happened, with descriptions and pictures of those events. The boarder consisted of words the actors used to describe the play. Also on the board was a poll asking audience members if torture was acceptable in dire situations. The board was also covered in muddy hand prints and included information about the playwright as well as production stills.

Saguaro (Drew University) – Dramaturg

  • Had the cast develop Pinterest boards relevant to their characters and displayed them on the Facebook pages as well as the lobby display. Check out their two boards Here and Here.

My Blog, Published Articles and Sample Work

My Blog:

My entire life, I’ve always been a pop culture blogger, just ya know, without the blog. For years my friends would constantly ‘shush’ me during movies because I would start listing all the acting credits of that guy eating lobster behind Tina Fey in Date Night. I challenged my friends to open debates about who was better for Buffy, Spike or Angel and I offered my Oscar picks to anyone who was foolish enough to lend me an ear.

Then, everything changed one day last November when I was watching an episode of the television show Reign. The writers of the show had Mary kiss Bash, and while it may not sound like an incredibly big deal, it was to me. I had a lot of feels. When trying to explain to my roommate why I was so upset, she replied, “You know I’m not listening right?” Oops. I did not know. But then she said the magic words which made it all better.

“You should just start a blog and find people who will actually understand and want to hear what you have to say.”

I created my blog, https://emilymiller91.wordpress.com/ that afternoon and my article on Reign, that night. 3,000 hits on that article later, I knew I had found my home.

Since then, my blog has expanded to include sections on Awards Shows, Television, Film, Music, Current Events and my opinion column ‘If You Ask Me…’

Published Articles:

I am currently a Contributing Writer at EliteDaily.com. My articles have been featured in their Entertainment, Awards Season, Culture and Women‘s section. To see articles I’ve written for their website, check out my homepage here.

My articles have also been shared on numerous websites including Reddit, The Undefinable Pro and Hypable.com

Samples of my Work:

How the Hunger Games and Jury Duty Are the Same Thing:

A group of people against their will enter a lone space together. They desperately want to leave, but signs of authority are everywhere. Armed officers and cameras watch their every move. There are no friends, and no one talks to each other. The room is in absolute silence as everyone fearfully contemplates his or her fate.

Then, the moment comes that everyone has been dreading: the moment their lives change. A voice announces that she will begin calling names. Those chosen must leave the safe space and follow the others selected out of the room with their armed escorts. As the names are announced, curses are uttered along with gasps of horror and disdain. They have to go. They have no choice.

No, this isn’t the reaping sequence from Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games.” It’s my description of my first morning of jury duty. Granted, that was a dramatization, but honestly, not by much.

On Director Ava DuVernay’s Oscar Snub for Selma:

When the Best Director nominations were read, it was another disappointment for females everywhere. It was an all male category…again. By leaving out Ava DuVernay the Academy lost the opportunity to nominate the first female director of color and chose not to reward her work on the most relevant film to my generation in the Best Picture race.

Regarding the Death of Robin Williams:

“GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING VIETNAM”/ “My first day as a woman, and I’m already having hot flashes.” / “It’s not your fault.” / “Carpe diem. Seize the day boys. Make your lives extraordinary.” / “You ain’t never had a friend like me.”

All of these quotes, all of these brilliant legendary quotes were said by the same man, Robin Williams. While all of those characters, Adrian from Good Morning, Vietnam , Mrs. Doubtfire in Mrs. Doubtfire, Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting, John Keating in Dead Poets Society, and Genie in Aladdin will forever live on in pop culture it seems Mr. Williams was not afforded the same gift he gave to his characters. He passed away today at 63.

Discussing the Failed Love Triangle on Once Upon a Time:

Since season two, the writers have clearly been pushing Emma and Hook together and honestly I can’t see an alternative for that pairing now that Neal is dead. Although I did ultimately want Emma and Hook together, that pairing is now tainted in my eyes. Regardless of whatever comes from their relationship, Emma never picked Hook. Captain Swan will never have the same urgency it used to have for me because Emma ended up with Hook by default. He was the one that was alive. He was the one that was left.

https://emilymiller91.wordpress.com/2014/05/01/if-you-ask-me-once-upon-a-time-has-failed-its-love-triangle/

On The Celebrity Phone Hacking Scandal:

After looking at all the names, it is easy to determine that every single person on that list has something in common. They are all women. There is not a single male listed. Come to think of it, beside the nude photos leaked of Prince Harry who was more likely targeted because of his title than anything else, has there really been a leak like this for any male celebrity? No, there hasn’t.

Why is that? I highly doubt it’s for lack of material.

So my question to the world, is where are all the penis pictures of male celebrities?

https://emilymiller91.wordpress.com/2014/09/01/if-you-ask-me-where-are-all-the-celebrity-penises/

On Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Hosting the Golden Globes:

Last night, the Golden Globes did celebrate all the movies that did not get censored by North Korea. More importantly, though, the two used their right to free speech to lampoon North Korea and its dictator, everything they were afraid “The Interview” would do. The joke is on North Korea because, although the movie was panned by critics and audiences alike, Tina and Amy’s hosting of the Globes has received nothing by raves.

http://elitedaily.com/entertainment/film/5-times-tina-amy-perfectly-nailed-whats-wrong-world/874935/

Why You Should Go See Divergent:

The word divergent itself means “tending to be different,” or “differing from a standard.” That’s what this film is. It’s transformed the image of a strong female protagonist and proven that this type of movie and character can be successful; and it’s grossed $114 million along the way.

That may sound like an easy feat because the success stories are dangled so loudly in front of us, Twilight, The Hunger Games and the Harry Potter series. But for every series that’s successful, there’s at least two films that aren’t. This year alone Beautiful Creatures, Ender’s Game, Mortal Instruments and Vampire Academy have all under-performed at the box office. Going back even further think of films like Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, Eragon, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and The Host. These films show that while a book has a fan base or been a critical hit, it doesn’t automatically translate into a good film or box office success.

Remembering Philip Seymour Hoffman:

In an age where everyone has to be thinner and prettier, he was unapologetic about who he was. He proved that anybody could be a movie star as long as they had talent.

Perhaps his greatest role yet, was playing Philip Seymour Hoffman. He made us believe that he was sturdy and strong and safe. Never could I imagine that this man was actually fragile. That’s how good he was. He fooled us all into believing he was fine.

My Disucssion of Bad Boys in Pop Culture and Why Sebastian and Mary Don’t Work On Reign:

I admit it, ‘bad boys’ are kinda my weakness. First it was Jess on Gilmore Girls. He came into town with that James Dean look, smoked cigarettes, had a leather jacket, and drank! (Gasp) Yet his weaknesses were books, and Rory Gilmore. While she was dating Dean, who was the perfect good boy, it was Jess that I wanted her with. I knew there would be problems BUT COME ON HE HAD A LEATHER JACKET AND STOLE RORY’S COPY OF HOWL IN HIS FIRST EPISODE. A bad boy with a love of Allen Ginsberg, how could I possibly resist?

First off, it was entirely too soon. There is a formula to be followed, and Reign didn’t do it. The bad boy romance can’t happen overnight. The Girl has to be with and love her good boy. Then the bad boy has to show the girl that he, is in fact, worthy of her by doing something good and unexpected, when her good boy cannot. We have to watch her realize that there is something there besides his unlimited supply of leather jackets and hair gel.
